Dreams

Daydreams never grow old
No matter how many times told
From generation to generation
Through stories of the ideal.
I'm waiting for its incarnation
So my dreams can become real,
But if there be no good in them
In the end God can see,
Then let them be cast in a bin,
Disposed of properly,
So a new one can begin.

Day 17

Delight yourself in the Lord,
    and he will give you the desires of your heart (Psalm 37:4).

Everyone probably fantasizes or has fantasized about something. I used to dream of being a host for an archaeological show. I wanted to be the next Samantha Brown and Josh Bernstein hybrid. But I’m not a world-traveling TV show host, and I’m also not a veterinarian like I wanted to be when I was ten years old. I’m a college graduate with many great work experiences under my belt, and now I’m mostly a caring mother and supportive wife–for this season. And there are some other dreams I believe God put in my heart long ago and then buried for a while that are coming back out at the right time. When I’ve been depressed, I’ve also daydreamed about some pretty nasty things, like myself or others getting hurt, but thank God He takes me out of those thoughts and brings me into His will.

The closer we are to God, the more we desire the things He desires, but the farther we are from God, the more we will desire things He does not desire. And the happiness we find in things undesirable to God will not last. The only lasting satisfaction we will ever have is in God and in the things that delight Him. Everything else leaves us wanting (John 4:13-15). In the end, God will have His way. His dream will come true. If we delight ourselves in Him, we will make His desire our desire, and His dream will become our dream, and that dream will come true. It may not happen during out earthly lifetime in this age, but it will happen.

And God gives us talents and puts aspirations in our hearts for a reason. He wants you to do great things for Him that He has equipped you to do (Ephesians 2:10), and He wants you to enjoy it. As you grow closer to God, those desires and talents will be cultivated and refined.
