Learning to Love: Day 29

The Proposal

The sun has set on this brief time
For a new one to arise,
A chapter's last turning page,
And for it we're more wise.
The future's road is long ahead.
Hand in hand we will tread
The lengthening of our years,
The learning of our lessons, 
The memories of our minds,
The purpose of our mission. 
The Lord grant you what you need in life:
Your solid faith and your godly wife.
I asked the Lord to teach me love
When I first prayed for you,
Fourteen down upon my knees.
It will take my life to learn it through,
And I choose to learn it with you.

Day 29

Set me as a seal upon your heart,
    as a seal upon your arm,
for love is strong as death,
    jealousy is fierce as the grave.
Its flashes are flashes of fire,
    the very flame of the Lord (Song of Solomon 8:6).

Whether you are married or single, my pastor says that there is no such thing as a Lone Ranger Christian. You are one member of a body, the Church, and Christ is the head. 1 Corinthians 12:21 says, “The eye cannot say to the hand, ‘I have no need of you,’ nor again the head to the feet, ‘I have no need of you.’” We need each other, whether you are married to a believer or not, whether you are single or not. Hebrews 10:25 urges us to meet together as believers, because it is that important to the growth of our faith. Jesus always sent disciples out two-by-two. He said where two or more are gathered in His Name, He is there with them (Matthew 18:20). Jesus taught me one Thanksgiving as I watched my young son and daughter playing together. I thought about how much my daughter as helped my son come out of his shell, to communicate, to play, to work out problems, and I thought about how much easier it is for my daughter to learn about the world with her older brother to teach her. They would be very different people without each other in their lives. Then God spoke to me and told me that my brothers and sisters in the Church are the same. I need them to grow. And my husband is my brother in Christ too. He is the most influential believer in my life. My mom told me when I was young that the two most important decisions you make in life are 1) receiving Jesus as Savior and 2) who you marry. So whoever is in your life as a fellow believer, whether spouse or relative or friend, is very important and influential to your faith, as you, likewise, are to them. The longer the fellowship, the sweeter the walk.

Sara DuVall is a wife and homeschool mom. She lives in the Tennessee Valley of North Alabama with her husband and four children. Originally from the Florida Gulf Coast, she was raised in the church and worked for the church for some time. Sara has a MA in English literature and certificate in technical communication, having work experience in the field of technical communication and technical editing. Her BA is in cultural anthropology and English writing. Sara has been writing poetry since she was about 13 years old. Inspired by a poem written by her great-grandmother, Sara has studied and enjoyed the art of poetry ever since. She is a published short story author in Northwest Florida State College’s Blackwater Review (2006 and 2007). She is also an award-winning short story author at the University of West Florida (2009). She published her first book, Learning to Love: a Collection of Poetry and 40 Daily Devotions, in 2021. The daughter of a choir director and college music teacher with an MA in voice, Sara was regularly exposed to music from an early age. Although she is a far cry from the vocal qualifications of her mother, and although she is not nearly as proficient a pianist as she should be from her tutelage, Sara has maintained her musical background by expressing herself through acoustic and classical guitar and the Native American style flute, composing many of her own songs. Besides writing and music, one of Sara’s favorite work experiences was as assistant curator of the Heritage Museum of Northwest Florida where she got to accession people’s old stuff and guide tours about it. They just don’t make things like they used to.
